Jerry Mushin grew up thinking he would become a medical doctor, but on trying and failing after the first year of medical studies, he switched to economics instead.

His subsequent 45-year career as an academic economist means that he understands the quirks, contradictions, absurdities, arrogance, pleasures, friendliness, enthusiasm, disputes, historical accidents, and humour that occur in universities and similar institutions.

In An Unlikely Academic, Jerry Mushin delves deep into the essence of academic life, offering a rich tapestry of experiences.

With a blend of humour and insight, he shares anecdotes that capture the essence of academic culture, revealing the intricate dance between individuals, ideas, and institutions. Through his unique perspective, Mushin provides a compelling commentary on the evolution of universities since the tumultuous 1960s, emphasising their symbiotic relationship with the broader political and economic landscape.

This memoir is an entertaining personal journey but also a reflection on the enduring relevance and evolving nature of academia in society.
