March has been big for us!
Earlier this month on International Women's Day we released three books which further demonstrate our commitment to women: women in sport, women in football, women in business and, of course, women in literature and publishing.
Three very different titles and different genres but with some common themes that women have encountered, and continue to encounter. We know there are lot of men who read our newsletters, so we encourage you please to purchase at least one of these books and reflect on the themes.
Michelle Ford's Turning the Tide (with Craig Lord) is the autobiography of Australia's only individual Gold Medal winner in the pool at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. But the story is much more than about a teenager who could swim fast! It's also about death threats, Olympic boycotts, doping, and a Cold War. It is a fabulous read about an unforgettable time in Australian sporting history, with a call to action to the International Olympic Committee, the Australian Olympic Committee and the Australian Government.
Lise Klaveness of Norway is one of the few people to have made the transition from national team player to president of their national football association. Since assuming the leadership role in March 2022, Klaveness has been a breath of fresh air in being outspoken about some of the more contentious decisions and practices of FIFA and UEFA. In Woman Offside, journalist Marius Lien takes us through a year in the football life of Klaveness as she attempts to fight the good fight of reform from within.
High Heels and Low Blows is a change of pace. It is a fiction for the contemporary woman - and one would hope also enlightened, contemporary men -about three women whose worlds implode and intertwine, and who forge a pact to support one another. The debut novel by Jill Valentine reveals some of the nastier deals, and ‘blue hushing’ in corporate life underscoring the high-pressure worlds of finance and hospitality, while proving that kindness and great friendships should never be underestimated.
