Andy Bernal's Riding Shotgun

Who is Andy Bernal?

  • Born: Canberra, May 1966

  • Played: AIS, Sporting Gijón, Albacete Balompié, FC Xerez, Ipswich Town, Sydney Olympic, Reading FC

  • Captain: Australian Schoolboys, Australia U-20, Australia U-23, Reading FC

  • Socceroos: 21 appearances, 1989-1996, Cap number 361

  • Agent to: Tim Cahill, Carl Valeri, Tom Rogic (et al)

  • Minder to: David Beckham

Andy Bernal grew up in Australia’s ‘bush capital’ Canberra and forged a career playing football in Spain, Australia and England over 15 years.

Along the way, he would endure racist taunts, be deported from England, be right hand man to David Beckham in his early months in Madrid, hit rock bottom, and become one of the many victims of the phone-hacking British media scandal.

'Riding Shotgun' is an extraordinary, honest and raw account which, much like Bernal as a player, leaves nothing out on the park.
