And now we're 5!

And now we're 5!

This month’s theme for PLAY ON e-magazine of the number ‘5’ has resulted in another creatively diverse group of articles.

We look at how the number 5 (as in the player with the number on his or her back) has evolved; how Liverpool FC has a history of ‘out of place’ number fives; some five-star number fives; one of the A-League’s most enduring number 5s, Ben Kantarovski of Newcastle Jets; Archie Thompson’s five goal haul in the 2007 A-League grand final; the first five goal scoreline in Australia; five lessons from promotion-relegation in the NSL and for football from COVID-19, as well as five post COVID issues for the football media; and a remembrance of things past … how wonderful football was when we were five – and the inspiration for this month’s cover image.

It’s another jam-packed edition of great, and varied, reading from an eclectic bunch of writers, authors and – above all – fans of the game.

Next month’s theme is the letter ‘M’ after which we move to a quarterly publication, available in March, June, September and December of each year.

Our best wishes are with our friends and colleagues in Melbourne and surrounds currently under stage 4 lockdown. If you’re reading this, we hope PLAY ON gives you some enjoyment at least, and something to think about.

We leave you this month with a quote from Christopher Morley (1890-1957), an American journalist, novelist, essayist and poet.

“Read, every day, something no one else is reading. Think, every day, something no one else is thinking. Do, every day, something no one else would be silly enough to do. It is bad for the mind to be always part of unanimity.”

Stay safe and happy!

You can purchase the August edition via our website, either as a downloadable, stamped PDF or via ISSUU for just $5.99.
