Football unites for #footballforfires

A couple of weeks ago, the Football Writers' Festival (which we convene along with the Johnny Warren Football Foundation) announced that it had changed its dates for the 2020 Festival to 30-31 May from its previously announced dates of 23-24 May.

The reason for the date change is for a big football event being organised to help rural aid and bushfire relief via Tribal Sports Group on Saturday 23 May in Sydney, known as #footballforfires.

The event is a football match comprised of Australian and international football stars who have come together for one purpose: to raise money for those so drastically affected by the shocking bushfires this summer. All funds raised will go to the Red Cross, the RSPCA and the FFA fundraising program to rebuild grassroots facilities. The money raised via the FFA fund will be shared amongst affected communities in the ACT, NSW, Queensland, SA and Victoria.

Today, some of the initial line-up for the match was announced which includes Australian players and a host of international players including some genuine superstars such as Didier Drogba, Stephen Appiah, Claudio Marchisio, Ji-Sung Park, Dario Simic and players well known to A-League fans such as Emile Heskey and Dwight Yorke.

  • Stephen Appiah – Juventus, Fenerbache, Udinese, Vojvodina

  • Michael Bridges – Sunderland, Leeds United, Newcastle Jets

  • Dwayne De Rosario – Toronto, San Jose, New York Red Bull

  • Didier Drogba– Chelsea, Galatasaray, Montreal Impact

  • Alecko Eskandarian – DC United, Toronto FC, Real Salt Lake, Chivas

  • Mark Bosnich – Aston Villa, Manchester United, Chelsea
